The Gene Golub SIAM Summer School 2010 is the second in a series of periodic International Summer Schools on Numerical Linear Algebra (ISSNLA) organized by the SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra (SIAG/LA). The first ISSNLA took place in 2008.

The 2010 ISSNLA will be supported in part by generous contribution from the Gene Golub Summer School fund. SIAM administers the Golub Summer School program from a bequest from the estate of Gene Golub.

The main goal of these International Summer Schools is to offer accessible courses on current developments in Numerical Linear Algebra and on the applications of Numerical Linear Algebra to other disciplines. These courses will be focused on recent research topics that have reached a significant maturity and whose impact is widely recognized by the community, but that are not usually included in text books, or in basic courses at the doctoral level.The SIAG/LA-ISSNLA is mainly intended for doctoral students in any field where methods and algorithms of Numerical Linear Algebra are used. Numerical Linear Algebra is at present a well established discipline and research on Numerical Linear Algebra covers applications, fundamentals of matrix computations, and software development. 

  •  Applications are quickly expanding from the classical ones (numerical solution of partial differential equations, statistics, optimization, control...) to new areas as data mining, pattern recognition, image processing, web search engines, particle physics...

  • Fundamental problems are still subject of intense research. For instance, structured algorithms for different classes of matrices and the corresponding structured perturbation theory, distance problems in matrix computations, high relative accuracy algorithms and the corresponding roundoff error analysis, fast matrix multiplication and its application to develop fast and stable algorithms in Numerical Linear Algebra, convergence of iterative methods, stability analysis of iterative methods, combinatorial algorithms, algorithms for matrix functions...

  • Development of reliable and efficient software is the final goal of Numerical Linear Algebra. In this context, there exist well known packages that are frequently revised and improved by adding new routines and functions, and new packages are constantly appearing.

  • The series of SIAG/LA International Summer Schools on Numerical Linear Algebra will offer courses on applications, fundamentals, and software developments.


    Attendance will be limited to 50 graduate students.
